The opportunity

Why smoothing services belong on your menu

Smoothing services sit at a higher price point than most styling appointments, they are booked in advance and they drive retail sales on every visit that follows. A salon that offers both Kerasmooth systems has something to recommend to almost every client who walks in with frizz, volume or condition concerns.

£

Higher revenue per chair

Smoothing treatments are premium services that clients rebook regularly. A single booking produces more revenue than most equivalent styling appointments, and a small sulphate-free retail margin follows every reapplication cycle.

Bookings planned in advance

Clients pre-book smoothing services rather than booking on impulse. That fills the column further ahead, reduces last-minute gaps and gives you predictable revenue weeks out rather than days.

Two systems, wider reach

The Brazilian Keratin System and BTX 50 serve different hair types and different client goals. Stocking both means you can make a genuine recommendation rather than selling whatever is on the shelf, which protects the result and protects your column.

What to stock

The two Kerasmooth systems

Both are formaldehyde-free formulas, made in Brazil, registered with the UK Cosmetic Product Notification Portal. Both are for professional use only and both are priced at £29.99 for a 120ml bottle.

Service routing

Matching clients to the right system

The most expensive error in this category is routing a client to the wrong service. The consultation decides this, not the client. Here are the most common types and which way they go.

Coarse, dense or curly

Client struggles to manage their hair day to day, high humidity reaction, wants sleeker and straighter results with significantly less styling time.

→ Brazilian Keratin System

Fine, porous or colour-treated

Hair lacks condition after bleaching or colouring, wants frizz control and improved manageability without losing volume or curl pattern.

→ BTX 50

Curly client, curl-conscious

Wants frizz control and a more polished finish. Specifically does not want the curl pattern to change. This is the clearest BTX 50 routing of all.

→ BTX 50

Humidity and travel

Hair reacts to weather, humidity or travel. Wants a treatment that holds up in the climate they live or travel in, regardless of hair type.

→ Brazilian Keratin System

First-time smoothing client

Nervous about a dramatic change, wants to try something lower-commitment. BTX 50 is the gentler introduction, with a shorter process and optional iron.

→ BTX 50

Regular colour client with frizz

Has frizz as an ongoing complaint but hair is already in a colour service. Assess condition carefully. If hair is sound, both are possible. If compromised, BTX 50.

→ Consult-led decision

⚠ Do not route based on what the client has decided before the consultation. The system suits the hair in front of you, not the treatment name they read online.

Getting started

Preparing your team

A smoothing service is a professional cosmetic process with its own protocol, allergen profile and contraindication list. Before your first appointment, every stylist delivering the service needs to know the following.

1
Read both protocols and do not mix them

The Brazilian Keratin System and BTX 50 have different preparation steps, different processing times and different iron requirements. The single most common error is applying one protocol to the other product. Apply on damp hair vs 80% dry. 30 minutes vs 40-60. Optional iron vs mandatory. These are not interchangeable.

2
Carry out a strand test before every first application

The strand test is mandatory, not optional, and must run the complete protocol on the test section including the full processing time and the ironing step where that applies. A partial test is not a strand test. Never treat a client who declines one.

3
Screen against the correct allergen list

Both systems share wheat, soy and macadamia allergen concerns. BTX 50 additionally carries an oat allergen the keratin system does not. Screen against the list for the system you are using. The two lists are not interchangeable.

4
Never exceed 200°C

200°C is the approved ceiling for both systems. Use 180°C on fine, damaged or bleached hair. If a section is not smoothing, add passes rather than heat. This is the rule that prevents the most common technical error in the salon.

5
Know the BTX 50 contraindications specifically

Pregnancy and breastfeeding are an absolute contraindication for BTX 50 with no medical clearance route. This differs from the keratin system, where prior medical clearance is required but a route exists. Do not carry one position across to the other product.

6
Set client expectations at consultation, not in the mirror

BTX 50 does not straighten the hair. The single most common complaint for this product is a client who expected straight hair and did not get it. That conversation happens at consultation, every time. A client who understood the result before you started is a client who leaves happy.

Keratin treatment before and after results
The rule that prevents every temperature error

"If a section is not smoothing, add passes - not heat."

Applies to both systems. Never ironed above 200°C.

Pricing guidance

What to charge in your salon

Product cost per bottle is £29.99. Correct application uses one bottle per service in most cases. Your service charge sits on top of that and reflects your chair time, skill and the market in your area.

The figures below are indicative ranges based on UK salon market data. Your rate depends on location, positioning and whether the treatment sits as a premium or mid-tier service in your menu.

Do not use the trademarked term in any written form, on menus, price lists, signage or social posts. Use "BTX 50 volume control treatment" or "Kerasmooth volume control service" in all written and printed materials.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be a registered salon to stock Kerasmooth?

Both products are for professional use only and are sold to salons, hairdressers and independent professional stylists. They are not suitable for non-professional application. Trade account applications are open to registered UK professionals.

How much product does one service use?

One 120ml bottle covers most services in a single application. For very long or dense hair a second bottle may be needed. Each bottle is priced at £29.99, and the maximum frequency of application is once per month per client.

Can I offer both systems in the same salon?

Yes, and most salons that add smoothing services should carry both. The Brazilian Keratin System and BTX 50 serve different hair types and different client goals. Stocking only one means every client gets the same recommendation regardless of whether it suits them, which is a service risk as much as a commercial one.

What do I need in the salon to deliver these services?

Ventilation during application and ironing is required for both systems - extraction is preferred. You need nitrile gloves, eye protection available for decanting, and a flat iron capable of holding 180-200°C consistently. The Kerasmooth Application Kit supplies the branded bowl, brush, clips, combs and gloves.

How long does a service appointment take?

The Brazilian Keratin System processes for 40 to 60 minutes before rinsing, then requires a full blow dry and the mandatory flat iron stage. Allow three to four hours for a full service including consultation and strand test. BTX 50 processes for 30 minutes with an optional iron stage, so the total appointment is shorter. Both services should be booked with a strand test either at the start of the appointment or as a short separate booking beforehand.

Can my clients wash their hair normally after the treatment?

Both systems require sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner for ongoing maintenance. Sulphate-based products break down the result faster and reduce the period for which the hair remains improved. Clients who will not commit to sulphate-free aftercare should be told this before the service, not after.

Are the products registered in the UK?

Yes. The Brazilian Keratin System holds SCPN UKCP-98410874 and the BTX 50 holds UKCP-38278917. Both are made in Brazil, and both carry UK Responsible Person details: Canzuk Global Ltd, 375 Regents Park Road, London N3 1DE.
